CHD Awareness Week

heart chdValentine's Day Hearts aren't the only type of hearts needing recognized this month. February 7th-14th is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defect in America. Approximately 1 in 100 are born with some form of CHD each year. Several students at SES/SMS have been affected by CHD in some way or know someone that has been. During Awareness week we would like all students and staff to participate in honoring all CHD warriors and families. Please show your Shenandoah ZEP your support by:

  • Wear Red Monday February 11th
  • Wear  Any kind of HEART shirt /jewelry/clothing --- February 12th    *unless you are participating in the 100th day dress up.
  • Wear Blue Wednesday February 13th
  • Wear Red /Blue or Clothing items with Hearts on February 14th
Attendance Matters --- Everyday Counts

attDid you know if your kids miss 18 days or more in a school year, there's a good chance they won't pass or graduate unless we intervene?

  • 1. Good attendance starts the night before. Children need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep. When the lights go out, so should the cell phones, videos games and computers.
  • 2. Set routines that allow time for your child to complete homework. Being prepared can help lessen your child's stress when it comes to attending school the next day.
  • 3. Don't allow your child being absent from school unless they are truly sick.
  • 4. If your child is missing 2 or 3 days of school per month, he or she is already on the wrong track. This will end up totaling more than one entire month of lost school by the end of the year.

Don't forget: sending your child to school is required by law. Every day counts! Good attendance matters for success.

From District Office on Solar Eclipse

THings to know Monday, August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse Info
As you already know, the solar eclipse is supposed to take place later this afternoon starting just prior to our students boarding buses for home. As a staff, we are planning to do everything we can to educate the students, prior to dismissal, on how to remain safe and exercise caution as they leave the building and ride buses home. Teachers have many different plans for our students to safely watch this 99 year event via video feeds from various sources including NASA,etc.

Just a few weeks ago we arranged for all of our students to have a pair of glasses so they could actually watch the eclipse occur from outside. Upon receiving these glasses, we could not confirm, nor could the vendor, that the glasses met the necessary safety specifications required for student viewing. Given this uncertainty, we chose not to distribute these glasses.

Please feel free to contact your student’s school office if you should have further questions and/or concerns. Thank you!

Principal's Message

Principal's Message 2017-18

Welcome back to SHS.  It is truly a wonderful time to be a Zep!  Our facilities have been upgraded throughout campus, be them in the building or on the grounds…we truly are getting better today.  Our staff continues to work hard to develop themselves and offer classes that will better prepare our students for the future.  We have expanded electives, for example…the return of the theatre program is a huge positive for our students, as well as our continued pursuit to add college credit plus classes that will benefit students and families down the road.  We are proud to announce that all 9th grade students will have freshmen experience class and begin their HS career on the right foot.  As a staff we continue to evolve and move to a more standards based grading system, with supports in place to help struggling students succeed.  It is our mission to provide all students opportunities to succeed in and out of the classroom.  If we can assist you in any way please give us a call and we will do everything we can to help you and your student.  We look forward to working with you and look forward to a wonderful school year.  Go Zeps!!

Celebrate Red Ribbon Week --- Take the Challenge

DID YOU KNOW? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Take the National Red Ribbon Campaign Pledge now and be a part of the creation of a drug free America.

WHAT'S THE PLEDGE ABOUT?

  1. As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.
  2. We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.
  3. We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.
  4. We will monitor our children's behavior and enforce appropriate consequences, so that our rules are respected.
  5. We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse.

Noble Local School District partnering with OVESC and 11 other districts to share services of Career Pathways Specialist

Choosing a career pathway is a key strategy for improving post-secondary and workforce readiness. Realizing this, other area Superintendents and I wanted to create a position to help support counselors and students in identifying career opportunities and “pathways” that exist within our community.  The “Career Pathways Specialist” position was created in partnership with the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center, with a goal in  year one  to connect with as many people as possible and to help implement/coordinate the area youth in our community with work-based learning opportunities, through real-world, career relevant experiences.

Have a Safe and Happy Summer

It is hard to believe we are at the end of our 2015-16 school year. We are very proud of the hard work and progress our students have made this year. Although the school year has ended, it is important for all students to read each day during the summer break.   Most of our teachers sent home a summer work packet for students to practice important skills over the summer. Just a little time spent on this will go along way in the fall.

We look forward to seeing all our students after the summer break.  Our "Back to School Bash" for the 2016-2017 school year is scheduled for Tuesday, August 16th more information will be posted later.  The first day of school is Wednesday, August 17th.

We look forward to communicating with our families on a continuous basis and encourage you to contact us anytime with input, questions or concerns. Together, we will achieve our goal of academic success for every student. Remember to read everyday during the summer.

Have a SAFE and HAPPY summer!

ZPass cards were provided to students free of charge as part of the "Straight A Fund" transportation grant that we were awarded. The ZPass is a small, credit card sized badge that is scanned each time the student enters or exits a school bus. This information is used to help the district ensure the safe transportation of our students to and from school by logging when and where they are picked up and dropped off from a bus. Parents can also access this information by visiting the secure ZPass website, a text message alert, or ZPass app at no charge. Students will be given their ZPass and an information packet on December 15th. For more information and the FAQ sheet, click “Read More.”

Start Talking!

Distart talkingd you know that children of parents who talk to their teens are 50% less likely to use drugs?

An effort is underway across Ohio to prevent drug use among Ohio’s most vulnerable citizens – our children. Governor John R. Kasich and First Lady Karen W. Kasich have launched Start Talking! to give parents, guardians, educators and community leaders the tools to start the conversation with Ohio’s youth about the importance of living healthy, drug-free lives.

A majority of substance-free adolescents credit their parents for the decision not to use illegal substances. Likewise, teachers and other authority figures can have a similar influence on youth and their decision-making.

Parents, mentors and peers can make a difference just by talking to the young people in their lives about drug use. Please Start Talking!
